Handle With Care

Shipping Crate Drawings… Six separate shipping crates with paper on the inside surfaces and a small drawing device designed to draw on the bottom surface were shipped individually over a ten day period from Vancouver to Montreal. Different handling language was attached to the outsides of the crates. One crate said “This Side Up” with arrows pointing up to one side. Another crate said “Other Side Up” on all six sides and so, when encountered on a loading dock it would get turned over… The device was weighted like a sail boat so that it would always land on its wheels. The pen was slightly off set in the round vehicle which created the circular and sine wave patterns in the drawings as it rolled. The drawings are the recorded history of the travels from A to B, literally marking every bump, curve, stop light and acceleration / deceleration of the trucks movement across the country by the Trans-Canada Highway. The initial exhibition was in 1991 in Montreal. The crates were then shipped back and then subsequently have travelled around the world twice for exhibitions in Europe and the US. New paper was installed for each trip. A limited edition lithograph was produced on the return trip from Montreal to Vancouver and is available for purchase.
