Coaster

A Sand powered hour glass mechanism drives a No 6 chain to pull a small wooden block vehicle up a daunting hill… after 25 minutes of increasing suspense testing ones patients, it reaches a release point allowing the car an exhilarating momentary spin around the track to the bottom which can be easily missed by the viewer. It is a painfully slow process to get to the top of the hill, and then a 1.5 second release of the accumulated kinetic energy.

1986. Welded steel, glass, wood.

In the collection of the Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington.
